A study of pyramidal cell axon collaterals in intact and partially isolated adult cerebral cortex.

چکیده
In an extensive series of experiments summarized more than 40 years ago, Cajal I described degenerative and other changes of pyramidal neurons of the cerebral cortex after severance of their axons. Many pyramidal neurons normally have collateral fibers and many of the fibers extend in recurrent, branching routes to higher cortical layers. Other collaterals have terminations upon nearby elements. The extent of collateral fields was increased if the deefferentation was done in immature brains of cats and dogs. CajaP reported no evidence that such collateral proliferation occurred in the mature or adult brain although he did not say specifically that mature animals were studied. It has been suggested4, s that proliferation of axon collaterals is a possible explanation for developing supersensitivity in undercut or similarly traumatized cerebral cortex. The authors implied that collateral proliferation might promote an increasing amount of neuronal excitability by way of positive feedback circuitry. This report, utilizing the Golgi impregnation method, is a quantitative evaluation of cortical pyramidal cell axon collaterals in 3 types of tissues, intact, undercut, and electrically stimulated undercut. Tentative conclusions were briefly mentioned in a symposium report a.

Development of horizontal projections in layer 2/3 of ferret visual cortex.
Pyramidal cells in layer 2/3 of cat striate cortex extend long axons that form clustered projections linking iso-orientation columns. Using extracellular biocytin injections in brain slices, the formation of these projections was examined in the ferret to determine whether horizontal projections exhibit similar patterns of development in the ferret and the cat, and to relate the time course of ...
متن کاملChandelier and Interfascicular Neurons in the Adult Mouse Piriform Cortex
The structure of two neuron types native to the adult mouse piriform cortex (PC) is described. The first cell, termed an interfascicular neuron (IFN), lies between the axon fascicles of layer I. The IFN axon divides dichotomously and daughter fibrils run horizontally in the domain of layer Ia. The frequent apposition of the IFN axon to distal dendrites of the underlying pyramidal cells suggests...
متن کاملSynaptic targets of the intrinsic axon collaterals of supragranular pyramidal neurons in monkey prefrontal cortex.
The principal axons of supragranular pyramidal neurons in the cerebral cortex travel through the white matter and terminate in other cortical areas, whereas their intrinsic axon collaterals course through the gray matter and form both local and long-distance connections within a cortical region. In the monkey prefrontal cortex (PFC), horizontally oriented, intrinsic axon collaterals from suprag...
متن کاملLong-term status of pyramidal cell axon collaterals and apical dendritic spines in denervated cortex.
Some central nervous system neurons when deafferented and deefferented (denervated) undergo progressive degeneration leading to cellular death and resorption of neuronal debris. In others, in what appears to be compensatory new growth, axonal proliferation is seen1,12. Whether proliferation occurs depends upon such critical factors as neuronal age, type and location of neurons and probably whet...
متن کاملLocal connections of excitatory neurons to corticothalamic neurons in the rat barrel cortex.
Corticothalamic projection neurons in the cerebral cortex constitute an important component of the thalamocortical reciprocal circuit, an essential input/output organization for cortical information processing. However, the spatial organization of local excitatory connections to corticothalamic neurons is only partially understood. In the present study, we first developed an adenovirus vector e...
